Wind-rated doors

Hurricane-Rated Garage Doors in Alva

A wind-rated door is heavier and built differently, so correct fitting matters. We explain approval and permit steps and install a door balanced to move freely.

Why This Stops a Door

A hurricane-rated garage door is designed and tested to resist a stated wind pressure. In Florida, that rating comes with a product approval, and the door must be installed exactly as approved, including the anchors and track mounting. Replacing a door with one of these generally requires a permit.

These doors are heavier and stiffer than ordinary ones, so spring selection and balance matter even more. A door that is poorly balanced will strain the opener or refuse to lift, just like any other. We explain the options, handle the fitting steps and test the finished door through full travel.

What You Will Notice

  • Door is bowing or buckling

Flex in the panels during wind may show a door that lacks adequate reinforcement or rating.

  • Missing approval label

No product approval label on the door may mean it falls short of wind-resistance and permit requirements.

  • Heavy door, strained opener

A rated door that moves slowly or stops partway may have springs that are not matched to its added weight.

  • Loose track or anchors

Track pulling away from the wall shows mounting that cannot hold the door steady under wind load.

How the Repair Goes

  1. 1

    Confirm the rating needed

We discuss design pressure and approval requirements and explain how the permit process fits the work.

  2. 2

    Install to the approval

The door, track and anchors are fitted exactly as the product approval requires, and springs sized to the heavier weight.

  3. 3

    Balance and test

The door should hold itself mid-travel, and the opener, limits and reversal are checked on completion.

Quick Answers

Can my present door be upgraded to hurricane-rated?
Usually not. Wind-rating belongs to the entire assembly, track and anchors included, and rests on an approval showing the design pressure it was tested to. Bolting on braces rarely reaches that, so replacement is the typical route.
Why do wind-rated doors need special springs?
They weigh more than standard doors because of the reinforcement. Springs must be sized to that extra weight, or the door will drift, strain the opener or refuse to lift, so we choose them from the actual door.
Is a permit always needed?
Generally yes for replacements here, and the door has to go in exactly as its approval specifies. We walk through the steps when we measure, so the process, the paperwork and its timing are all clear.
