Garage Door Cable Repair in Alva
A cable that has snapped, frayed or jumped its drum leaves the door tilted or locked. We replace it, reseat the drum and check the tension on both sides.

Why This Stops a Door
Two steel cables, one on each side, carry the door's weight from the bottom brackets up to the drums on the spring shaft. If one snaps, slips or unwinds from the drum, that side drops while the other still lifts, and the door twists in the track.
A cable under load can release suddenly, which is why the bottom brackets are not for owners to loosen. We replace the cable, check the drum for damage, and look at the opposite cable as well. Cables age together, so the second side often shows similar fraying.
What You Will Notice
One corner drooping
A door hanging lower on one side points to a cable that has let go or jumped its drum.
Slack cable beside the door
A loop of loose wire at the lower corner, or a cable resting on the floor, shows it is no longer carrying load.
Frayed strands
Broken wire strands standing out along the cable show wear that can end in a sudden snap. Do not touch them.
Door jams on the way up
With one side hanging low, the rollers bind in the track, so the door halts with a grinding sound and goes no further.
How the Repair Goes
- 1
Take the load off safely
The door is secured and tension relieved before any cable or bracket is touched, so nothing can move unexpectedly.
- 2
Replace and reseat
A new cable is fitted with the drum checked for wear, and the opposite side is examined for matching fraying.
- 3
Level and test
Both sides are set to equal tension, then the door is cycled to confirm it rises level and stops evenly.
Quick Answers
- Can I lift a tilted door back into line myself?
- Please do not. Forcing a door that has lost a cable can bend the track or buckle a panel, and the remaining tension can release suddenly. Leave it as it sits, stay clear of the bottom brackets and describe what you can see.
- Is a slipped cable always a broken cable?
- No. A cable can jump off its drum while still intact, often because the door jammed or the cable went slack. We find out why it came off, then reseat it or replace it depending on its condition.
- Do both cables get replaced?
- Not always, but both are inspected closely. If the second cable shows similar fraying or wear, replacing it at the same visit makes sense, since cables age together and a repeat failure on the other side is likely.
